Wierd behavior of Windows Update today

Discussion in 'Windows Update' started by Charles Romer, Jul 8, 2004.

  1. The text below is excerpted from the update history for my
Windows 98 system. As you can see, the Windows
update "downloads" and "installs" this update to my system
each and every time I visited Windows Update today. As
best as I can understand the documentation for this item
it appears to apply only to Windows XP! So what gives, eh?

  2. Charles,

Check in the Add\Remove Program tool in Control Panel to see if it
    shows as being installed.
If it does, check the file attributes of the patch with those on
    your system :

    27-Jun-2003 02:19 2003.1100.5426 311,864 Html32.cnv
    27-Jun-2003 02:19 2003.1100.5426 116,288 Msconv97.dll

They are located in the Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared\TEXTCONV folder. Right click on the files, choose Properties,
then click the Version tab to find out which version is installed on
    your system.
If the files match and it is showing as installed in Add/Remove
Programs, then the patch was installed and the Windows Update site
is not recognizing it as being installed.
You can then either uninstall it and then download a "fresh" copy
and reinstall it again, OR edit the Registry to show it as
installed. Editing the Registry can cause your system to be unusable
if not done correctly. If the it shows as installed in Add/Remove
and the files match and you wish to edit the Registry, please post
back and I'll give you the instructions to do so.

Download the update from the Windows Update Catalog if you need to
obtain it again, save it to your Hard Drive. Install it with
Internet Explorer closed and your antivirus program temporarily
disabled OR, do it in Safe Mode so as to minimize any interference
from programs running in the background :

REMEMBER to reenable your antivirus program after the update installs.
