Win XP Pro or Win MCE??? Looking to buy a new PC.

Discussion in 'Windows Media Center' started by Kelley Bryant, Feb 26, 2004.

  1. Hi there - I am a web developer that also loves watching movies and listening to MP3's on my current PC. I want to buy a new pc, but I am not sure if I should be another XP Pro box or a new MCE? I have read that MCE 2004 does everything XP Pro does but with the added features or Video, music, etc

I really don't have any need to watch tv on the new pc or record tv programs. I would basically be using it for development, listening to music, watching videos, and maybe making home videos.

    Any suggestions

Are the MCE machines more expensive

    Thank

    Kelley

    The big MCE features are:
    TV recording
Display of pictures, movies, music using an uncluttered interface
    Simple navigation using a remote

Because of all these it makes it entertaining at a party with a large screen
where anyone that knows how to use a remote can navigate the menus and
    sample media.

If you are not going to use these features then I suppose there is no point
in getting them. But be sure because you cannot buy just the software later.
For that reason and the fact that the MCE PCs are not that much more, I
would go with the MCE. If you have a DV camera it is more fully compatible
with MCE. If you have an analog video camera, well then having MCE actually
complicates things a little since the first impulse is to use the tuner to
capture from your camera but the TV recorder also wants to use it. You are
better off buying a separate analog capture card, or recording to a DV
camera first. I also don't recommend MCE as the only PC in a large family.
If it is used by kids to watch TV then say "sayonara" to any other work.

Many new MCEs also have FM radio so another big feature is collecting
everything in one box. The remote can also control Napster and Live365 music
services and CinemaNow and Movielink movie services. In the future
developers such as HomeSeer will be adding Home control also.

In my mind there is a lot to be missed out on by not getting an MCE.
