win2k3 DC in win2k mixed-mode domain

Discussion in 'Active Directory' started by Alessandro de Manzano, Sep 29, 2004.

  1. Hello,
I'm deploying a couple of new servers in our LAN (managed by 3 win2000
server domain controllers with AD in mixed-mode, not native mode) and I'm
thinking about using win2003 instead of win2000.
I'm looking for informations, hints, suggestions about real compatibilty and
stability of w2k3 servers when used in such situation.
I mean, I found only how-to for _upgrading_ the domain to win 2003 AD
(extended AD schemas, new ACL, etc.) but I have not yet understood if it
would work also in a "simple" win 2000-style mixed mode domain as Domain
Controller (I do know it works as simple domain member)
I really would avoid to upgrade to new AD schema, etcs, if possible.
Anyone else already solved this "problem" ? :)
    Any hint is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance!

  2. If you are putting Windows Server 2003 machines into an existing Domain
currently with Windows 2000 DCs, and these new servers will also be DCs
then you ARE upgrading the Domain and will be required to do the schema and
    domain upgrades (forestprep an domainprep).
If they are going in as member servers then you need not do anything.
