    Thanks Carey
The updated WGA diagnostics tool worked for me :) Excellent
(tried all the other suggested methods and they didn't work)

Are you telling me that Dell sells illigitimate copies of Windows now? Why
does the validation work when I run it myself at Microsoft.com? You are
grossly misinformed and your attitude in this matter should rate a loss of
    your MVP status.

  3. I never said that and you are blatantly using
    my words out on context.

The solution for this problem has been posted for at least five days. Have you
bothered to look for the solution? I suggest it is not Bill Gates that needs
    waking up.

This response was made by a true ID10T. I have a legitimate Windows XP
license and I'm getting the error as well.

Anyone with a brain wanna give a helpful solution?

While I agree with you, I must confess that I installed it on two
computers, one in English and the other in Spanish and have had no
problems at all. Did you disable your AV before downloading and
    installing WGA?

Really? See the rest of the thread, Mr "MVP".

  18. Carey - You are being much too judgemental. I have a completely valid copy
of Windows XP and still have a problem doing the update. I can even go to
the Microsoft web site where you can validate your copy and it validates my
copy (as it should). I have learned in my years of computer experience - if
you see a problem, don't be too hasty to write it off as the user's problem.
Yes, there may be some users that don't have valid copies of Windows, but
with the volume of users that are having this problem, there is more chance
that the software has a legitimate problem with it.

    Great I thought. A solution!

    But wait, no.

I tried this and it validates my copy fine, but update still wants to
download and install the WGA that won't install and so I still can't get
past Go to collect the latest updates.

    WGA Diagnostic Data (1.5.0514.0):
    --------------------
    Genuine Validation Status: Genuine
    Windows Product Key: *****-*****-36J2P-HT3T3-QPMFB
    Windows Product Key Hash: +NNF346DA3Rr/gGjXZtwAv8AQuM=
    Windows Product ID: 55277-OEM-2111907-00100
    etc,etc.

I seem to remember that when I initially ran the WGA some months ago I was
warned that there was a problem with the way my OEM (Acer) had set up the
laptop and while this was "ok at this point in time it may cause problems in
the future". I was wondering if they'd used a corporate type of licence as
the recovery disk used a Ghost image. Great, but difficult to provide an
individual key on every pressed disk.

I guess we reached that future. The thing that pisses me off is that I have
a validated version of Windows I can't update and reinstalling won't solve
the problem because on this machine they use a Ghost image of the original
disk. So I'd be back to square one.

If I can't update the OS to patch the never ending stream of security
problems I may have to look at moving to a different OS on this machine.

Get it right Microsoft. A partial fix is no fix at all!

    Neal,

I have been working on this problem with Microsoft support since 03/10/06.
If there was a solution posted why don't the support people at MS know about
it? I spent 3 hours on my first call and after trying everything including
loading XP Pro from a different CD and using a new CD key that MS generated
for me I still get an error during validation. The tech finally asked me to
hold so he could get a supervisor then I got disconnected! A new tech called
back today 03/13 and after trying some more things said they would have to
forward the problem to the research department. What kind of bull is this?! I
started checking other machines on our network that have all validated fine
in the past and today each one downloaded and installed the KB892130 update
and now they all fail validation! If there is really a fix for this please
post a link to it instead of just saying there is one. How hard is it to
paste a link if you already know about it? I have searched for days for a
solution but still cannot find one. Or at least tell us where to look for the
solution. I found this thread after searching google for a while.
