    Carey,

We paid quite a bit for our 20 copies of WinXP Pro which are obviously
geniune. They came shrink wrapped with the manual and COA. And the CD's and
COA pass every test posted on the "how to tell" website. Why is it then that
all of our workstations that had previously validated fine will no longer
validate after the KB892130 patch is automatically installed by the windows
update website? I have spent a total of 4 hours on the phone with different
techs from MS support and still cannot get the machine to validate. They even
generated a new CD Key for me and had me reinstall WinXP Pro and still no
luck. You should not assume that every one having this problem is using fake
copies of WinXP! Very poor judgement for someone who has "professional" in
    thier title....

Countless Dell users have posted about this problem & that was your response
to all of them. It's in perfect context!

  3. Wrong. I responded to one individual poster and
    not to a group collectively.

  4. I have updated and install the Windows Genuine Advantage (KB892130)
update on over (25) Dell/Gateway/HP machines recently and not once experienced
any problem with that particular update.

I'm in the same boat. Perfectly valid XP install on a fairly new Dell.
Found this thread on Google too. I downloaded the package as recommended
earlier and get the "access denied" message even though I'm running an Admin
    account. Bizzare.

I'm going to try some of the things recommended in this article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319585/en-us

Even though it isn't really for XP. But, it reads like it might apply
nonetheless. I hope somebody can figure this out. :-(

Well, apparently something I did in that article worked. I am now
    downloading updates.

  7. Just because you are not having problems and may not be affected does not
mean that legitimate Windows XP owners are not being affected. I have seen
first hand the WGA fail on both individual licenses and on a volume license
as I work for a university that has a campus agreement with Microsoft. Don't
be so quick to judge just becuase you are not currently being affected.

    Hi leo8888
Did you try the link Carey Frisch [MVP] posted to the update GWA Tool ? It
    worked for me .

After running the tool, please return to Windows Update and try it again.

  9. Carey,

No, you are wrong. While oftentimes pirated software is the problem, you
should not make the assumption that it is always the issue. I am not a
Microsoft basher and I never get involved in this kind banter, but your
attitude really pissed me off. I know a little something about how to
install Microsoft products. I found this thread looking for a fix for a
validation issue exactly described herein (i.e., it passes validation but the
WGAVT won't install). As a MCP I could call support and get a fix but
    sometimes this is quicker.

While I am sure much of the update process is for the protection of
consumers, I am also sure much of it is designed to keep Mr. Gates' World's
Wealthiest Man title. Stop pretending that isn't so. I am actually okay
with that so long as you don't punish legitimate users in the process. It is
bad enough that lots of field time is spent dealing with Microsoft created
problems, don't heap on bad attitude. Your responses should be constructive
    or stay off your keyboard.

  13. Thank you for the fix for this problem. BUT you should be removed from this
and any Microsoft board because your first response to someone complaining
about a problem was to accuse them of have a pirated version of XP. And don't
you feel like an A** for being quick to accuse and it turned out you are
wrong? Your first response should have been to look to see if this is a
problem others are having not to blame the poster of being a software pirate.
    Please remove yourself.

I ran the tool and it worked fine. But back to Microsoft Update and nothing
wants to install. I have to say that I reinstalled my machine from scratch in
the last 24 hours because following other advises I came to a point were the
machine was not able to read root level certificates...
Now certificates are fine, and WGA Diagnostic Tool (1.5.0514.0) returns
Validation status: Genuine... but still unable to install the following
    packages :
    - Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1
    - Mise à jour pour Windows XP (KB898461)
    - Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

As this appends to times in a row I suspect the last to be the problem. What
    to do ?

I too have this problem on a legit WIN XP Pro on a Business Compaq EVO N620c,
yet my newer dell at home had no problem. They are running nearly identical
software, albiet different licenses, and slightly different versions of some
programs as I don't do all at home that I do at work.

This problem has been bugging me since the update popped up.

This is my very first time in any MS forum, and I must admit that the
attitude taken here by a representative of Microsoft is irrational. Yes we
    all
know MS Windows has no bugs. This i why we no longer see patches on a
    windows update.

I have paid for 6 licenses of windows professional. 3 Gaming systems for my
    Sons,
Wifes Notebook, my notebook at home and my office notebook. None had an
issue except my older EVO n620c. I am certainly not a theif.

My copy of Windows XP is legit. I have recepts and media to prove it.
Furthermore, previous versions of this update worked fine... until this last
one. Clearly Microsoft goofed on this.

So, what is the real answer?
