Windows logs me off automatically right after I logon

I had an older W2k3 server, with service pack 1, which I wanted to upgrade to
R2 (using an MSDN version). Because the R2 disc kept claiming it was a wrong
product key I decided to run cd1 as well and do an 'upgrade' of my existing
    W2k3 server.

This looked to be working fine, until...
I tried to logon to the system. I tells me Windows has to be reactivated
again. That's no problem, the networkcable to the internet is plugged in, so
I selected "yes". And the system logs me off.

Booting in safe mode doesn't work. I get in Windows then, but in safe mode
you're not allowed to reactivate Windows :(

Any ideas on how to solve this problem?
