I'm new to this, so please bear with me.

    1) Over a year ago, I copied 4 of my own CDs to my laptop as audio files *.
    2) Everything worked fine with Windows Media Player
    3) Last week I updated to Windows Media Player 11

    4) Now to Play any of the audio files:
    ...a. internet connection is required!
...b. MS Windows Media Technologies message appears: "To play the file on
this computer, you must download a license (a process known as "license
    ...c. click "Download License"
...d. by clicking, two messages appear:
......1st msg: "Message from webpage: Error 438: Unknown error occurred when
    storing your license."
......2nd msg: "A license has been downloaded to your computer. You may now
    use the file."

    5) Good! Tried to play the SAME audio file, and I got the SAME b, c, d as

What is going on and Why this trouble ??

Are there "secret codes" on the CDs to convince WMP that the audio files are
legitimate and they're mine and I don't need a "license" to play them ??

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Andrew;

Thank you kindly for your prompt reply.
I followed your instructions, but I'm afraid the problem remains unsolved!

    1) I downloaded/ran the license migrator utility you kindly provided the
    link to.
    2) Ran "Personal License Update Wizard for Windows Media Player"
.....specified the full path of the folder where the media files are
    ....."License Update Comppleted."
......"Congratulations. The license for the protected content you copied
.......from your CDs are updated. Click Finish."

......"To use this wizard again, run program file: DRM70to71.exe"

    3) Restarted the system. Clicked WMP. Selected an audio file to play.
SAME problem as reported earlier in the OP, namely:
...a) "A license is required to play this file"
    ...b) Clicked "Download License"
    ...c) two messages are displayed:
......1st msg: "Error 438: Unknown error when storing your license."
......2nd msg: "A license has been downloaded to your computer. You may now
    use the file."

    4) OK. Tried to play the same (and other) audio file again.
Got SAME a, b, c, as in item 3) above!!!!!!!

    Other suggestions ??
