I am running XP Home Edition on my Presario 1500 laptop. I've been trying to
install SP2 for quite some time with now luck. I have automatic updates
enabled, but this update always fails. I've tried to install it manually and
it fails to install every time as well.

I tried to install SP1 yesterday and it failed as well. Smaller updates
seem to install just fine, but the SP updates fail.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I forgot. The error code I receive when the installation of SP2 fails is
    Error Code: 80070017

I'd recommend you start by doing a full system cleanup. The steps in;en-us;319585 provide some
good tips/reminders about that. That article doesn't mention it, but look
for a Hidden folder named WUTemp and delete it and all contents.

When done with the above, click Start/Run and enter: net stop wuauserv
(you'll see a DOS window open then close)
Next use Explorer and open the Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder. Delete
    the Datastore and Download folders.
Then from the Run line type: net start wuauserv (you'll see a brief DOS
    window again)

Then give SP2 install another try. BTW, if you were installing manually
from a downloaded file, I would avoid that one for right now as the download
may be corrupt or incomplete (the 0X80070017 error indicates a CRC problem).
Either install SP2 via Windows Update directly, download a totally new SP2,
or order the CD and wait for that.
