    Hi,

I had no idea under which discussion group I should put this question.

I bought Windows XP Pro X64 and installed it in my computer, and I
registered it. I've had it for about a week and I don't like it. Can I
unregister the product key and try to sell it so I can buy Vista, or since
the product key is already in my name, can no one else register it?

If it is an OEM version of Windows XP Pro X64 edition, It is not
permissible to install it on a different computer. The licence
becomes tied to the first computer it is installed on. I believe that
there is no Full Packaged version of 64 bit XP available. This
should be spelled out in the Licence agreement you accepted during or
    after the install of Windows.

Thanks for your help. It's OEM. I'm sure it was spelled out in the license
agreement but I didn't read them. License agreements are very long, written
for a lawyer to understand, and they all say that if you don't want to accept
their terms, then don't install the software, so everyone's computer would be
    useless.

Perhaps the only way out of this now is to buy an upgrade version of
whichever Vista you want, which would be cheaper than buying a full version.
Microsoft allows you to do this as an xp x64 owner (they say so on the
website). However, you will still have to do a clean install, which is
probably what you want to do anyway.
So, you get a small break on the price. Not as good a deal as if you could
sell your x64 to someone else, but at least it's something.

At this point, I'm wondering if XP64 is a passing phase that will die away in
a couple of years. When I bought X64 last Spring, I hadn't heard of Vista.
Since Microsoft makes Vista in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, it seems as
if it has plans for Vista and has washed its hands of XP64.

I think they've promised to support this and the other XPs for a few more
    years (2010? 2011?)
I thought you said you've only had it for a week?

I built my own computer and after I bought everything for it, I was afraid
*embarrassed* to start building it. I decided a few weeks ago to start and
when I couldn't even get the backpanel off, I went to MajorGeeks and they
helped me all the way through. So my computer has been up and running for
    really only about a week.

But even if they promised to support it, will the software and hardware
manufacturers cater to Vista or XP 64-bit, and how can anyone be sure of
    Microsoft's promises?
