WINS lookups to PDC not running WINS server

Our Unix DHCP server issues IP addresses to all domain workstations, but does
not include WINS server IP addresses as we don't run WINS. By default, when a
PC receives an IP address (without a WINS server being specified in the DHCP
reply), it does a WINS lookup to the DHCP server, which just drops it as it's
    UNIX.
If we start to issue the PDC Emulator's IP address as the WINS server in
DHCP replies, am I right in saying that it would just drop the WINS lookup
request too as it doesn't run WINS?

    Thanks,
    Iain

  2. Why would you need to provide a WINS server address if one doesn't exist?
There is no value to this.

    Ian,

WINS Server must be available for client to do WINS lookup, according to
your setup, i can professionally guess tthat WINS server is absent in your
    infrastructure.

  4. Hi Iain,

I understand that clients are performing wins lookup after they receive an
    ip address from DHCP server.

If this is the situation , can you disable the WINS lookup on the client
interface and test it, i guess after client receives the IP address , clients
checks it WINS tab and goes for a lookup . so can you disable the WINS option
from client Tcp IP properties tab ?
