Windows update finally came back to me today on all 3
machines (hosts solution worked for 1 of 3)

Problem was DNS server entry at some level

PLEASE NOTE SOME ISPs INCLUDING COX WERE BLOCKING ACCESS
B/C OF BLASTER REROUTING THE SOMAIN
DOWNLOAD.WINDOWSUPDATE.COM TO 127.0.0.1 (YOUR NETWORK CARD
INTERNAL LOOPBACK) which is why all works well up to that
point then the download fails after accepting the EULA
    agreement

Cox is getting their users back p to speed (see the
broadband reports website, they have a lot of posts from
    Cox engineer)

Sympatico in Canada. Can confirm MANY user problems as of
yesterday and it all seemed to come back today

Videotron cable users in quebec seem to have been spared
(at least 2 that I know)

IF YOU DID THE HOSTS FIX, EVENTUALLY YOU SHOULD TAKE IT
OUT OF YOUR HOSTS FILE INCASE THE IP ADDRESS CHANGES

Recall if you need it, you can take the update name and
search microsoft manually, then download and install the
    files needed
