I'm unable to install any windows updates on my XP Home system. I get as
far as Accepting the license agreement. When I click on agree nothing
happens. Windows Update Log shows nothing but success messages. It doesn't
matter which update I pick none of them work. The ones I'm trying to
install are: 819696, 817778, 818043, Windows Error Reporting, and Directx
9.0b End-User Runtime. My Windows info:
Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633:Service Pack 1). Hope someone can

  2. Try this and let me know if it does the trick:

    Please re-register the following files:
    regsvr32 msscript.ocx
    regsvr32 dispex.dll
    regsvr32 vbscript.dll
    regsvr32 scrrun.dll

    1. Click "Start," and then click "Run."
    2. Type regsvr32 msscript.ocx in the "Open" box and click "OK."
    3. Repeat for dispex.dll,vbscript.dll, and scrrun.dll.

Next, make sure file (open) type .JS is properly associated:
    1. In Control Panel, click "Folder Options," and then click "File Types."
    2. Locate the .JS extension and click "Advanced."
    3. Make sure the "Application to perform action" field contains:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\WScript.exe "%1" %* This is for a Windows XP computer.
For Windows 2000 substitute the C:\WINDOWS\ with C:\Winnt\. For Windows 98

This did not work. I reregistered the files. The Open action for .JS files
was already set to C:\WINDOWS\System32\WScript.exe "%1" %. I rebooted after
I reregistered. I also tried clearing the temp folders in c:\, c:\windows,
and the one in my local settings folder. Then rebooted again. Still
    doesn't work.

I got the update function to work by uninstalling Netscape 7.01. I had to
manually delete the Netscape folder in the Program Files folder before it
would. Thanks for your help David.
