WMA causes system to stutter

I have not found a definite solution as to why whenever I
play my audio files with WMA9.0, my system starts to
stutter - mouse stops responding for a moment, opened
windows refreshes at a slow rate, a longer pause than
usual when switching between opened windows, etc. I
thought I could bear it, since the symptoms occur every
once in awhile, but after some time, it did get a little
annoying. As soon as I shutdown WMA, everything returns
to normal. I am not sure whether an unwanted setting
within WMA or XP Pro is causing this. This is why I am
posting my problem here - to get feedback. My specs are:

    1. Windows XP Professional w/ all available udpates
    2. Windows Media Player 9.0
    3. K2-6 550MHz w/ 384MB of RAM

    Thanks in advance.
