recently installed WM Version 10 - ripping a CD set for MP3 at 256kps
    resulted in 3 files - a 256kps MP3 a 128kps MP3 and a WMA file. Anyone know
how I can adjust settings to stop this happening?

Under WMP's Tools:Options:Devices:Advanced, do you have 'convert in
    background' set?

I'd imagine the 128 versions would be for your device...

(speaking for myself and doing this in my free time)
See http://www.zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.
