Does anyone know if 2002 edition will be upgraded to 2004? Either by
    purchase or free.

This is up to OEM that supplied the machine. Contact them directly for
their upgrade policy. Some charge a shipping and handling fee to get the

  3. runandgun,

Most OEMs have in place an upgrade path. It varies from one to another, but
most will get their systems upgraded. HP for example offers a free upgrade,
incuding free shipping. Others may charge a nominal fee.

I expected most people to have already upgraded to 2004 already which brand

I do not have any yet. I am considering purchase, but found that a 2004
edition would be available soon. I held off purchasing the HP laptop until I
knew the situation concering the 2004 edition. The pc comes with the 2002
    version. Thanks for your help.

Call HP. They will send you the 2004 upgrade for free, at least in
continental USA, I don't know about other places.

Notice that you need to use the specific upgrade CD for your model. The MCE
2004 upgrade disk from the OEM not only includes the MCE sofwtare itself,
but also additional upgrades for other OEMs software and drivers bundled
    with your system.

I would not consider buying a new PC with MCE2002 on it unless the price was
good. If you buy a PC (or laptop) with MCE2004 already on it, you will not
have to go through the upgrade process (obtaining, waiting, installing) and
if you ever need to re-install the OS, you will be able to go straight to
