WMP 11 Upgrade problems - still has WMP 8/9 skin but WMP 11 data

Discussion in 'Windows Media Player' started by McHenry_kramer, Jan 22, 2009.

  1. After upgrading to WMP 11, when I run the .exe, the old WMP skin is
displayed. When I check the version information, it says it is Version:
11.0.5721.5230 in the About menu item. When I play a song and choose full
screen mode, the skin is then the WMP 11 skin. This is also the case when
minimizing and the mini player is displayed on the task bar. I have tried
many different things to successfully upgrade the player: deleting
application data, changing versions, rolling back, multiple install attempts,
edits to the registry. However, nothing has been successful. This problem
keeps me from accessing the normal tabs for WMP 11.
For example, I can't access the Library to play or edit any items. I have
to play media from the directory/folder that it is saved in directly.
    Has anyone else seen this?
Is there a way to completely uninstally WMP so I can have a fresh install?
Is there something maybe I missed?
    Please help!

  2. Hey Neil,
Thanks for the reply. However, I am not simply in skin mode. When the WMP
window is not minimized or full screen, it appears as an older version and I
do not have full access to the WMP 11 features. I've worked in IT for
several years but I have not had this problem arise. I am not sure what is
not getting updated when I install WMP 11, but something is not pointing to
    the right place.

    What's the file version of wmploc.dll ?
Could you put up a screenshot on flickr.com or something?

    Thanks, that was very helpful.

The picture you called "8_9" is actually the player in Classic skin mode.
Leave skin mode and you'll be back in the regular player UI.

If you cannot leave skin mode, that would indicate that the "Set and Lock
Skin" group policy was set in the Group Policy Editor.
