WMP will happily play all music files, and will open with no problem, however
as soon as I attempt to get it to play a video file (mostly avi's if it
matters) it errors and closes. In addition, when I open a folder containing
all my video files, the folder errors and closes as well.

I'm running WMP 11 beta at the moment on a P4 with Windows XP Professional.
The problem literally started overnight. I was originally using WMP 8 when it
started, which I upgraded to WMP 9 and then 11. The problem occurs in all 3
versions, as well as the two versions of the classic player I have.

Sorry if the problem is the OS or the video files, but I have no idea what's
    going on! Any help appreciated.
