WMP won't play anything using keyboard shortcut, only opens WMP

I am using a Microsoft Ergo Wireless Keyboard (Duo) and I have WMP 10
installed. I used to be able to hit the "Play" shortcut key on my keyboard
and it would automatically start playing a song. Now when I hit "Play" I
have to Alt+Tab out of my programs to start a song. Hitting "Play" only
opens WMP, but nothing plays. I get a blank blue screen with no playlist
onscreen. I then have to go to the Library tab and double-click a song for
a playlist to appear on the right side of the player, then I can use all the
    keyboard shortcuts.

Why is this happening? I have created a playlist and it is stored on my PC,
but for some reason it does not load automatically. Am I doing something
wrong here, or is there some option I'm overlooking that will allow me to
listen to music with a touch of a button?
