I can't use the standard Microsoft audio codecs on my computer anymore,
    they simply have disappeared.

    If I try to re-install "WM9Codecs.exe", from
    my computer says "Installed successfully".

However, If I try to see which audio codecs are installed on my computer,
    (using "msinfo32.exe", then "Components/Multimedia/Audio Codecs"),
    NO audio codecs are displayed.

I'm running WinXP Pro SP2 french version + latest online updates +

Moreover, I have an AVI file with the following features :
    (VideoInspector version says : )

    Codec type: Video
    Code: MJPG
    Full name: IBM Motion JPEG
    Codec type: Audio
    Code: 0007
    Full name: Microsoft uLAW

If I try to display it, I can see the video but can't hear the audio.
WMP10 tries to download the audio codec unsuccessfully (error 80040200 =
Unable to download an appropriate decompressor). I have tried to follow
    the instructions on "http://support.microsoft.com/kb/230687" setting
the security stuff to medium but it doesn't change anything.

I have spent my whole day trying to solve the problem so any help would
    be very much appreciated...

Did you install any codec pack here... ? I believe that certain codec packs
are currently nastily stomping on the ULAW codec - which would correspond
"nicely" to your codec corruption. =\
