WMP10 - No CD or DVD burner has been detected

When I click the Burn tab in WMP 10 I get the following message in the right
hand pane and above. "No CD or DVD burner has been detected. Press F5 to
refresh the Player." When I press F5 the message above changes momentarily
to "Finding devices. Please wait..." but changes back to the "No CD or DVD
    burner has been detected" message.

In the properties of my CD burner (CRX700E on a Dell Inspiron 8000 running
Windows XP SP 1) I see the recording tab and "Enable CD recording on this
drive" is checked so it seems XP recognizes the CD burner. Why wouldn't WMP
    recognize it?

I went though the same problem about 24 hours ago. Make sure you have the
IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service set to have a startup type of "manual". I
suspect yours has been set to "Disable", like mine was.

Thanks. The IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service is set to Manual startup but it
was not started. I started the service and launched WMP 10 but the No CD
burner message persists. I do have Nero InCD 4 installed on the computer.
I know I can just use Nero for CD burning, but I like it when all my
software works the way it is supposed to. :)

In WMP10 when I go to Tools-->Options-->Devices and select the CD-RW drive
there is no Recording properties. There is only Playback and Rip so it
seems that even though the recording tab is present in the drive properties
in windows explorer (I forced XP to put it there with a registry edit) it
seems the CD burner isn't actually recognized by Windows XPs built-in
CD-Burning service. To confirm this I tried burning a data CD using the XP
built-in CD-Burning and the message I got was "there is no disk in the
drive". Well so much for that. The drive works fine with Nero Burning ROM
and InCD, however, so I do know it works. It's too bad XP/WMP10 isn't
    playing nice.

I can't even get WMP10 to play DVDs. So I'll just stick with Nero for CD
Burning tasks, PowerDVD for DVD playback, and you know what? iTunes works
great for audio playback and it even recognizes my CD Burner and burns audio
CDs with no problem. It's nice that Microsoft tried to stuff all that
functionality into Windows Media Player but it looks like it needs some more
    work.
