WMP10: storebought DVDs work, vendor DVDs don't? help!

We have been working with an external vendor who took video of a training
event and burned it to DVD for us, using "industry standards" for the DVD.
Our PCs can play storebought DVDs, but can't play the vendor's DVDs using
WMP10. The same PCs (and others) using actual DVD-playing software /do/ play
the training DVD, and the training DVDs also play fine on standalone DVD
    players.

I'm a complete newbie, but I need to troubleshoot and work with the vendor
to figure out how to get their DVDs to play under WMP10. I figure codecs are
on the machines with the DVD-playing software, but these training DVDs still
    don't work on those PCs.

What should I be looking for/at? The vendor seems to be stumped, so I need
to know what types of questions to ask them and our IT department to figure
    this one out...

    many thanks,
    Keith
