I read somewhere that the next WMP, possibly with Win7, will support
DivX. I have not seen or read anywhere yet Microsoft's about-face
position on DivX. Anybody have such a link? Just a little while back
Zach said on here DivX was "an abomination". What changed their mind?

A: By DivX, you evidently are using it as a generic term, as most tend to,
    meaning "MPEG4-in-AVI".
    B: There's no "about-face" here that I'm aware of.
C: Howdy, I'm "Zach". Read my sig: I enjoy speaking for myself only. I
guarantee you that I am not "they".

"DivX", a generic term for MPEG4-in-AVI, has been a hideous mess for users
for the past ten years, and probably will for some substantial length of
time to come regardless of what Microsoft does. It doesn't seem like a
"change of mind" or "about face" when Microsoft tries to take a stupid
    situation and improve it.

And yes, I think anyone well versed in multimedia should look with horror at
what happened in this field starting in about 1998. Mass distribution of
alpha level codecs, mass pirating of codecs so that commercial vendors turn
away from the field (and in some cases the last available version of a
popular codec is rife with serious bugs) - if this doesn't pain you as a
multimedia fan, you're probably not paying attention. =)

None of this has anything to do with Microsoft making the computing
experience easier for users. That's a win right there, that is. =)
