WMV files lose sound when fast forwarded in WMP9

I have XP pro SP2 with all the latest updates but I don't have .NET and I
have not upgraded to WMP10. I have WMP9 and for some reason in WMV files
when I fast forward (by moving the slider along) it continues to play but
with no sound (sometimes if I fast forward just a bit its ok - but fast
forwarding a lot leaves it soundless but the video is fine). Note that also
with WMV files if I fast forward then both the video and sound lock but the
    slider is still going.

I did have a problem with the codecs where some WMV files were playing with
very odd colours - almost negative in a way - but I downloaded the WMP9
codec pack and that fixed that.

    Any ideas about this problem?

That last sentence wasn't written too well! It should have said 'Note that
    also with SOME WMV files...."
