i run a sbs2003premium and several winxp clients..
the shared printer - hp color laser jet 2600n - is attached via network
cable - and it's recognized fine by the server..
it is also ok to add the shared printer to the clients..

but just after adding the printer to a client - i can print eg a word doc
    only one time..
if i try to order another print - word reports that it has encountered an
error - asks me to recover the document..
i can elect to recover or not - if not - then word just closes down and no
    print..
i get a message (taskbar popup) that the job was sent to the printer - but
    nothing happens..

error says that printer lost connection to the server..

anyone of you guys had same prob..?

    Hi Wave,

Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.

I have checked the printer and find that it is not listed in the HCL of
windows 2003 server. So the issue may be caused by the incompatibility.

To make sure that your printer is compatible with Windows Server 2003,
    please check the HCL list:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/catalog/server/default.aspx?subID=22&xslt=h
    ardwarehome

You may need to test using a printer which listed in the HCL to see if the
    issue still occurs.

I am appreciated your time and look forward to hearing from you.

    Best regards,

    Crina Li (MSFT)

    hi Crina,
thx for your time spent with this item..
matter of fact is that i did a full re-installation of my sbs2003premium and
    re-connected the winxpsp2 clients w/o problems..
before the re-install the printer worked fine with everyone..
    now it does not..
i can print a wordpad or notepad but when trying to print an office 2003
word - or an acrobat doc - then the error message comes up..

all clients have full access to the printer..
i can ping the printer from all clients..
i have no other printer to test..

    Hi Wave,

    Thanks for your reply.

To narrow down the issue, would you please help me collect the following
    information?

    1. Does the issue occur on the SBS server console?
    2. Does the issue occur on all clients?
    3. If you try to reinstall the printer drivers on both the SBS server and
the clients, does the issue occur?

However I still want to clarify that the printer is not on HCL and we
    cannot guarantee its functionality.

Thanks for your understanding and I look forward to hearing from you.

    Best regards,

    Crina,

when i check the hcl - i find this info..
to me it looks like the hp color laserjet 2600n is compatible with
sbs2003standard - so i assume it's also compatible with the premium edition..?
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ca...tail&pgn=70D7081F-3705-E78A-43F6-45E4EFB22A9C

another of your points: i did not install any printer driver at the client
    pc's - should i do that..?
i didn't do that before re-installing - and then the printer worked from any
    client..
i can print ok from the sbs - i do not have office2003word installed on that
one - so i cannot check that..

  6. Hi Wave,

Thanks for your update! I am jenny and I am backup of Crina for she is now
taking leave. I will continue work with you till Crina back. I am sorry for
    inconvenience for that.

For your current situation, please perform the following tests to isolate
    the issue:

    1. Please try to find a client workstation which only is installed Office
2003 or Word 2003, but not installed any Acrodob applications, then try to
print Word file, how about the result?

    2. Please also try to connect the printer to one problematic workstation to
    test, how about the result?

    3. What is your meaning of " i didn't do that before re-installing "? Do
you mean the issue happens after you reinstall printer driver on server?
And also let me know if the issue happens on client workstations.

I appreciate your time! We are glad to be assistances of you.

    Have a nice day!

    hi jenny,
pleased to meet you - i'm sure crina enjoys her time off :)

responding to your no 3 question:
    before i re-formatted my hard drive and re-installed the sbs2003 premium - i
could use the shared printer on the sbs from any client without installing
    the printerdriver on the clients..
now - after re-installing the sbs - i can not use the shared printer on the
    sbs from the clients..

but - after installing the printer driver on all clients - they are now able
to fully use the printer directly - via fixed ip address on my lan.. i have
not setup the sbs to share the printer now - it uses the printer on its own -
    like the clients..

but i would have thought that i should be able to only install the
printerdriver on the sbs - and then share it to all clients - without having
to install the driver on all clients..

    Hi Skywave,

    Thanks for your reply.

I am sorry for the delayed response due to weekend. Please understand that
the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals to
answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is
    greatly appreciated!

I suggest you perform the following steps to re-share the printer on SBS:

    1. Delete the printer from all clients.
    2. Delete the printer from the server.
    3. Reinstall the printer on the server and install the latest driver for
    the server.
    4. Share the printer and install the additional printer drivers for all
    types of workstations.

You can download all the latest drivers for this printer from the following
    HP web page:

    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?pnameOID
    =21860&locale=en_US&taskId=135&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=27901&submit.y=
    6&submit.x=12&cc=us

For more information regarding how to share a printer and install
additional drivers for the clients, please refer to the following Microsoft
    Knowledge Base article:

300392 HOW TO: Install and Configure a File and Print Server in Windows 2000
    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=300392

    5. Let the clients browse the shares of the SBS server (\\SBSServer) and
double click on the shared printer to install it on the clients.
    6. Test the issue again.

I am appreciated your time and look forward to hearing from you.

    Crina,

    (I'm the former 'skywave' :) )
I have made a fresh installation of 2003SBSpremium and WINXPpro on the
    clients..
Again - when it comes to the printer setup - I get into problems..

I install the printer on the server (network IP) - and then I share it..

On the clients - I can make a 'print test page' OK..
But if I open a Word doc - and try to print this one - then comes this MS
Word Print error screen - asking me to send a report or not - and to save my
    doc..

If I elect to install the full printer on the client PC - I have no prob
    printing..
Actually I suspect the prob to be a PORT problem..
Reason being that when I install the printer on a client - one of the first
things is that it warns me that some ports are closed by Windows Firewall -
and asks me if I wnat to open these in order to proceed..

So - how can I still avoid installing the printer on each and every client -
    and instead open these ports..?
And how do I find out which ports - and how to open them..?

    Crina,

Your link didn't work - but it directed me to try some other HP links - and
    I ended up here:

    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...esId=446153&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1005

Downloaded driver and firmware updates - installed them - and now - IT WORKS
    :)
And the best thing is that now the printer is only installed on the
2003SBSPremium server - and the clients uses that shared printer - saves a
lot of un-necessary client printer installs..
Just as it's supposed to be..of course..

So it was just a matter of a driver..
Hopefully it will continue to work - after re-starts of clients and server
etc.. And future in and out of Word sessions..
    Will remain to be seen..

Thank you for leading my the way..

    | Crina,
    |
    | Your link didn't work - but it directed me to try some other HP links -
    and
    | I ended up here:

    | Downloaded driver and firmware updates - installed them - and now - IT
    WORKS
    | :)
    | And the best thing is that now the printer is only installed on the
    | 2003SBSPremium server - and the clients uses that shared printer - saves
    a
    | lot of un-necessary client printer installs..
    | Just as it's supposed to be..of course..
    |
    | So it was just a matter of a driver..
    | Hopefully it will continue to work - after re-starts of clients and
    server
    | etc.. And future in and out of Word sessions..
    | Will remain to be seen..
    |
    | Thank you for leading my the way..
