WSS 2003 DFS Compatibility with Windows 2003 Server R2?

Discussion in 'File Systems' started by Chee Lam, Canada, Jan 30, 2006.

  1. 1. Does WSS 2003 come with DFS and FRS?
    2. If so, can the WSS 2003 work with Windows 2003 R2's 'DFS Replication'
(state-based replication mechanism) DFS-R or it will just revert back to the
    FRS based DFS?
    3. When will the WSS 2003 R2 available?
    4. Will the WSS 2003 R2 have the DFS-R feature?

The scenario is HQ and branch office. We wanted to deploy WSS 2003 (DELL
745N)at branch office and replicate data back to HQ to a Windows 2003 R2
    server. Will this scenario work?

  2. I asked one of our program managers, Claus Joergensen, to respond to your
    questions. His answers are below:
    [Claus Joergensen] Yes
[Claus Joergensen] No. They are separate replication mechanisms.
[Claus Joergensen] We expect OEMs will have systems with Windows Storage
Server 2003 R2 available in the second quarter of this calendar year.
[Claus Joergensen] Yes, all versions of Windwows Storage Server 2003 R2,
except Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 Express will support DFS-R
[Claus Joergensen] No. You will need all replication partners to be Windows
Storage Server R2 or Windows Server 2003 R2 to take advantage of the new
    DFS-R feature.
