WSUS Instalation Fails - No Relief!

I've seen this posted a number of times; but definitively there hasn't been a
    solution for this malady.

    Current Setup:
    Dell PE 2650 Dual Xeon's with HT disabled / 2GB RAM / RAID1 / 1000baseSX
    Windows 2000 Server Std. wSP4 + Post-SP4 Rollout + latest patches
    Running SUS currently
    Running SQL Server 2000 SP3 + hotfixes (8.0.760)
    Running .NET Runtime 1.1 + SP1 (dated June 2005)
BITS v2 is installed - all WSUS prerequisites have been met

When executed, the WSUS installer runs fine, sees my SQL instance and does a
test to validate connectivity. Gets to the point where it tells me the ports
for WSUS management. Then comes runs the installer script. It copies file
and (re)installs ASP.NET. While under the label of “Installing the Microsoft
Windows Server Update Service" (registering the WSUS service, perhaps?) i get
    a serious error.

The issue is that the WSUS installer bombs with an error which states: "
There is a problem with this windows installer package. A program run as
part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel
    or package vendor".

From entries in the application event log I can see that the last thing to
occur was that 'ASP.NET 1.1.4332 was configured successfully'; though there
is an entry within the application log for MSInstaller (event ID 11722),
which i posted at the end of this message.

I've tried running the 'failed' ASP.NET command just mentioned and
referenced below while the WSUS process is executing and it reports no errors.

Any clues onto how i may sole this cumbersome dilemma?

Thanks for your time and assistance!

    Cordially,

    /gjr

Tried installing MSXML v3 SP5 to see if it has any effect and then
reinstalled the recently released 'Post SP4 Rollout 1'. Still bombs at the
    same place.

    Thanks again for your time,

Has anyone had issue installing WSUS on Windows 2000 SP4 where an existing
SQL Server 2000 instance AND a MSDE instance were already installed?

I read somewhere that the MSDE client coming with WSUS was for Windows 2003
    only - can anyone validate?

    Thanks,

    /gjr

  4. The WMSDE that is installed with WSUS is only for Windows Server 2003.

To use MSDE with WSUS on Windows 2000 Server, first you must install
MSDE2000 Release A and configure it as instance name "WSUS" as described in
the documentation for installation on Windows 2000 Server.

One of the things I did prior was create a MSDE database called WSUS using
the MSDE engine based on SQL2000 SP4 and rebooted before running the WSUS
installer. I then selected the MSDE SP4based WSUS database and continued
down the installer path ( the one you can find at the bottom of this page:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...8D-C20E-4446-99A9-B7F0213F8BC5&displaylang=en )

The results were the same - the WSUS installation would fail after reporting
the same exact error listed at the end of this email. Reinstallations and
repair of .NET dont get me anywhere; either. As my previous posts will show
I tried running the command shown below from the command prompt whie the WSUS
iinstaller was running; that didn't work either.

Any further help at this point would be appericiated.

    Thanks

  6. I am seeing the same problem here after deinstalling WSUS and trying to
reinstall. The problem seems to be that the install programm tries to create
Performance counters that are still there and were not deleted by the
deinstallation process. Have a look at the logs mentioned there and you will
probably see the same at your side.

I have yet to figure out, how to get rid of those performance counters
    though....

    Kind regards,
    JP

I got WSUS to install finally. Check your "ASP.NET State Service" status -
odds are that it’ll be set to manual or disabled. I started the service in
question as a test procedure because i was noticing that the ASP.NET
performance counters were failing to install *even* when I tried installing
the WSUS performance counters manually with a hijacked copy of the files it
    places to “%SYSTEMDRIVE%\program files\update Services\â€. While test
installing portions of WSUS .NET code; I discovered that the registering
performance counters –or any other ASP.NET operation requiring the execution
of aspnet_regiis.exe were failing. The only culprit it could be was some
ASP.NET dependent operation wasn't happening. Honestly; I should have caught
on to this sooner. I was too engrossed going through a 7MB installation text
file looking for errors while this was a glaring fault staring at me right in
    the face.

Indeed, once i started the "ASP.NET State" service and restarted the WSUS
installation it then proceeded as expected; with no issues whatsoever. I
    have it running now on a Windows 2000 SP4 + ‘Post SP4 Rollup 1’ with a Dell
2650 dual 3.06Ghz as a server foundation and a stand alone, pre-existing SQL
2000 SP4 instance installed. WSUS is in fact quite the update to SUS - IMHO
    it works rather well, indeed.

Please note though that when you install WSUS it automatically queues
MSIEXEC 3.1 and BITS 2.0 for installation - the msiexec update will require
a reboot (depending on your Windows Update GPO options, of course). If you
don’t want these items installed for whatever reason - msiexec more so than
the required BITS - then remember to disable it accordingly before any
    machines register with WSUS.

    Cheers,
