Xbox 360 - Can't stream videos / Session Terminated

Using Windows Mediacenter 2005 SP2 with all the updates.

Have an Xbox 360 as an extender.

Here is what I have noticed:

    1) Everything including TV, Music, Pictures works fine. However, I can not
videos from the My Videos folder.

    2) I had a shortcut in the "My Videos" folder to a large folder on
another drive with about 50GBs of videos. When I tried playing a video, the
little circle would spin forever and/or I would get the "Session
Terminiated - another user or device on the Windows Media Center PC has
disconnected this device" The video would never play.

    3) If I remove the shortcut in the "My Videos" folder and just leave one
single .WMV file in the root of "My Videos" directory, the video will still
not play AND I get a
different error message...."Disk Error A temporary problem occurred when
Media Center attempted to play TV. Please restart Media Center and/or the
    computer and try again"

    4) All of the Media Center functions including streaming videos, TV, etc
were working previously on the same exact setup. These problems started
happening when I reinstalled Windows Media Center fresh on my computer.

    5) I have an HP Officejet G55 printer/copier/scanner attached to my
computer. When in Media Center, when looking at the My Videos, My Pictures,
or My music....there is a folder called "HP Officejet G55" in them. This
folder does not exist on the PC in those folders however. There are no
media files in the HP folder.

    Any Ideas ?

  2. 2 - The first thing to do is to check the Application, System, and Security
Event Viewer logs (right click My Computer --> Manage) for any errors
corresponding to the time that you were disconnected and then post them

3 - this could be a file permissions issue; try copying (not moving) the
file to the Shared Videos folder on your PC and then attempt to play it from
    there; does it work?

I've had the same problems as well earlier. Try taking out any videos that
the extender can not play from the My Videos folder and see if it still
comes up. For some reason that was causing my problems and I just had to
move any non .wmv file to another folder for the time being.

While I have not tried playing previous videos, I was experiencing
disconnects wile playing back recorded TV programs. I had found another
thread on the disconnect issue and posted my discovery.

Basically, I found that MCE2005 does not seem to like my Intel gigabit
adapter. The driver would restart and cause a Dr. Watson, which generated a
popup that make the extender session terminate. When I switched to the
embedded 3Com NIC it started working fine.

The video plays fine within the Media Center application on the PC.

Here is more I have noticed. I only get the "Session Terminated" problem
when I have a shortcut in the "My Videos" folder to another directory full
of videos on another drive. If I remove this shortcut from the "My Videos"
folder, my session always stays up, but vidoes will still not play from the
    360. I get an "Application Failure" message on the Xbox 360 extender. This
SAME video plays within the Media Center application on the PC however.

I am also getting these errors in the application log when attempting to
    play the video.

  6. Few questions:
    - Do those event log events correspond to when you got Session Terminated or
    Application Failure?
    - What types of video content are you trying to play? (MPEG-1; MPEG-2; WMV
    7, 8, 9, etc.)
    - If you navigate to Online Spotlight and attempt to play streaming video
from a site there (e.g. MSN TV), does it work?

Also, as a heads up, I will not have newsgroup access for the rest of the
week so I won't be able to respond further until Monday.

Those events did not occur when I got the Session Terminated, because I no
longer get the session terminated error. The session terminated only
happend when I have a shortcut in "My Videos" to another directory. The
events did not repeat when I get the application failure either. so it is
    tough to say.

I am attempting to play a .WMV file in the "My Videos" folder.

Navigating sites like MTV, VH1, Comedy Central via the Online Spotlight
always produces the "Application Failure" message.

Are you sure you are not running into permissions issues...

  9. Please check for Media Center Update KB912067 on your PC.
Check for this update by doing the following:

    1. Open add and remove programs ( Start à Control Panel à Add and Remove
    2. Select the option on the TOP right to show updates
    3. Look for the Windows XP Media Center Edition group of programs. Look
for Windows Media Center Edition 2005 KB912067.

If this is listed, temporarily uninstall this to backrev the ehshell.exe.
Once uninstalled reboot your system and try your repro again.

    Please report back your results.

After removing KB912067 - I still have the same problems. No videos will
stream. However, everything else (TV, Music, Pictures) works fine...

No matter if the .WMV is in the "My Videos" folder for my profile, or in the
Shared Videos folder, I still get error:

    Application Failure

A critical Media Center process has failed. Please restart the computer and
try again. If the problem persists, contact your hardware manufacturer for

Again, video streaming was working before I reinstalled Windows Media Center
on my machine. I have the same exact hardware setup and networking
environment, so it seems to be a problem in the Windows environment
    somewhere. HELP !!!!!

    Thanks alot

  11. Suggestions for further troubleshooting:
First recommendation: There maybe something else located in the folder with
the .wmv file that may be causing this issue. Temporarily move all the
contents of the "My Video" folder to a new location (example: c:\temp) Copy
in a single wmv file back to the "My Video" folder and try to stream. If
this works look a the other file types in the temporary folder for any non
wmv content. Narrow down the root cause by copying in diferent file types
    until the issue reproduces.

Second recommendation: Try to determine is this is caused by a specific .wmv
file or if this occurs with any .wmv file. If you find it is a particular
..wmv file try to determine what is unique about this file.

I had this problem - as Janelle said when there are videos that cannot be
played in "My Videos" it will cause the session terminated. What causes this
is the codecs used to make these videos. I searched all over for the
solution and found that the extender's codecs are burned into the chips and
cannot play xvi or divx encoded files. I moved these files from "My Videos"
    and problem was solved.

    I faound the info here:
