I can't seem to get things working, the boot loader (Grub
    at 800*600 16bpp) works fine but I can't get X to start.

Here are the values I've tried:

    Horizotal scan range : 30-72Khz
Vertical scan range: 47-160Hz (both taken from my monitor
    manufacturer's website)

Generic VGA compatible chosen for card definition with
4096k of video memory and possible modes 1024*768, 800*600
    and 640*480 at 8, 16 and 24 bits. And a default colour
    depth of 16 bits.

    Any ideas?

use generic VESA with 8MB instead for the video card.
