XP image do not boot

Discussion in 'Virtual PC' started by [email protected], Feb 18, 2005.

  1. Hi !

I made a virtual machine based on XP system with a fixed virtual disk of
    500MB.
I cannot boot on the virtual machine disk and I don't know why, there is no
    error message.

I prepared the disk using Microsoft Windows Preinstallation Environnment,
NTFS format, partition activated and copy of ntldr, ntdetect.com and
    boot.ini but nothing happens !!

I tried to use a disk of a variable size of 2Gb but the result is the same.
(I tried to use a real XP embedded image instead of ntldr, ntdetect and
boot.ini but always the same reult : nothing !)

what am I doing wrong ???!!

    thanks
    Mike

  2. For one thing, why are you using a virtual hard drive of only 500mb? If you
are installing XP I recommend that you use the default 16GB.

  3. I use a virtual drive of 500MB because I have to install an XP embedded
image that takes only 250MB and because my target device has a compact flash
    of 500MB.

I made another virtual machine for a complete xp pro install and I tried to
install it. It works !! and the disk boots !!
Now I will tried to delete all files and copy my xp embedded image files
..... i hope it will be work !!

  5. It almost sounds like you want to use VPC to emulate an embedded device.
VPC emulates a desktop computer. It cannot be customized to emulate other
types of devices. Perhaps you need an emulator for your embedded device,
using it perhaps in Visual Studio.

  6. Thanks for your answer but I am sure that virtual pc can host an xp embedded
    system (cf. XP Embedded help).

I succeed in XP pro install and now the disk boots ! So I tried to delete
all files instead of format and now my xp embedded image works on virtual pc
    ! strange...

if someone have an idea ...
    thanks

    Mike
