    I have read almost every post about installing the network within wfwg3.11
    but no one else seems to be having the problems that I am having. I
    downloaded and installed the intel 2104 driver within wfwg3.11 . The problem
    is now whenever autoexec.bat is executes the line windows net start, it loads
    the driver for the network, and just sits there and hangs. It seems as if
    most people are getting away with this easily. I am just looking to be able
    to have internet access within 3.11 . I will appreciate any help anyone is
    willing to give.

    P.S. I tried changing the DNS to 4.2.2.2 or whichever previous posts said
    and this also had no effect on the problem.

    Windows xp pro, athlon xp 3200, 1gig ram, radeon all in wonder 9800pro,
    soundblaster audigy, anything else you need to know let me know

    Can you post your config.sys and autoexec.bat?

    You might also want to set the VM to use Shared networking (NAT) to see if
    that makes any difference.

    i've tried every way so far that networking setup within virtual pc has, and
    they have not worked. Here are my config.sys and autoexec.bat - also, my
    physical connection to the internet on the host computer is a usb wireless
    card if this makes any difference, but i don't think it would since virtual
    pc emulates the network card anwyays - thanks

    autoexec.bat

    C:\WINDOWS\net start
    C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE /X
    @ECHO OFF
    lh c:\vide\shsucdx.com /d:mscd0001
    PROMPT $p$g
    PATH C:\WINDOWS;C:\DOS
    SET TEMP=C:\DOS

    config.sys

    DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE
    DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
    DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM
    DOS=HIGH
    DOS=UMB
    FILES=30
    LASTDRIVE=Z
    DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS
    DEVICEHIGH=C:\VIDE\cdrom.sys /d:mscd0001
    STACKS=9,256

    I only have a couple of differences, but here's my config.sys and
    autoexec.bat

    C:\>type config.sys
    FILES=30
    BUFFERS=10
    DOS=HIGH
    DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
    DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE
    DEVICE=C:\DOS\POWER.EXE
    LASTDRIVE=Z
    DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE /DOUBLE_BUFFER
    DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS
    STACKS=9,256

    C:\>type autoexec.bat|more
    C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE /L
    C:\WINDOWS\net start
    C:\WINDOWS\umb
    C:\WINDOWS\tcptsr
    C:\WINDOWS\tinyrfc
    C:\WINDOWS\nmtsr.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\emsbfr.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\dnr.exe
    @ECHO OFF
    SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\DOS;%PATH%
    SET TEMP=C:\DOS
    C:\DOS\MOUSE.COM
    C:\DOS\DOSKEY.COM

    (and just type win to start Windows)

    Your NIC may very well be the problem, have you tried any other OS and did
    that work?

    I also have windows 2000 pro installed on a virtual drive, and it immediately
    detected the internet and worked. It really is confusing to me, i even tried
    to driver for the digital semiconductor version of the 2104 chip. Maybe
    there's an update that I have to download for win 3.11? This is the same
    3.11 that I have installed on a 486 and it connects to the internet perfectly
    with ie 5.0. Thanks

    I also have windows 2000 pro installed on a virtual drive, and it
    So we know the host NIC works with VPC.
    I don't remember doing anything.

    How much RAM do you have allocated to the VM?

    There is currently 32mb of ram allocated to the windows 3.11 vm. I could
    have more i guess, but i believe there actually is a limit on ie 5.0 and
    systems with over 32mb of ram, and also 32 is more than enough.

    To be absolutely honest I followed that guide to the T, the only thing I
    didn't do was install ie5 in standard mode, but i was having problems before
    this happened anyways. Basically when autoexec.bat is trying to start my
    network driver, intel, it locks up. My guess is that it is trying to emulate
    the wrong IRQ or something maybe? I used to have problems with that when i
    actually used 3.11 as a permanent computer. PCI ethernet cards never worked
    well with 3.11 . But I guess I am alone in this locking up scenario, unless
    someone else experiences the same thing i don't think i'll be able to fix it.
    I might uninstall everything and try again. Thanks everyone for trying to
    help though.

    hangs windows... i'm running 6.22, so i don't know why - but still thanks
    for fixing the first prob
